The Battle of Our Time

In the following paragraphs are four headlines and the stories that go along with them. We’ll start as recently as August, 2026, and work our way backward in time.
Headline One: Massachusetts Bill, 2026
In August, Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey (D) signed H.5595, the Prioritizing Patient Access to Care Act. The law removes the state’s previous protections for the unborn that limited abortions after 24 weeks to specific circumstances. Under the new law, abortions after 24 weeks may be performed by a “physician” based on the physician’s “professional judgment.”
In other words, abortion is now allowed through all nine months for any reason. Massachusetts is now the 10th state to allow abortion through all nine months. During the signing of the bill, many women stood in the background cheering and celebrating the new law.
Headline Two: McKenna West, 2026
McKenna West was an Alaskan nurse who was a surrogate mother for California couple Nausheen Gilkar and Omar Ahmed. She was carrying baby Gabriel when he was diagnosed with hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS), a congenital heart defect that would require medical aid. Before long, the biological parents decided they wanted baby Gabriel aborted in the 23rd week of pregnancy.
Heroically, West refused to undergo the procedure, which would have dismembered Gabriel limb from limb. Instead, West flew to Texas and gave birth to baby Gabriel on August 12. He underwent treatment for his heart condition and remains in critical condition—but he’s alive. Yet even after demanding he be aborted, Gilkar and Ahmed maintain that they are the child’s legal parents, even as West is the only parent who carried him and fought to ensure that he received life saving medical care.
This is an ongoing case. Please pray for baby Gabriel.
Headline Three: South Carolina, 1788
A wealthy plantation owner gathered with neighboring slaveholders after the news broke that the United States Constitution had been ratified. The men had a feast in celebration, relieved as they found out that the new government would not abolish enslaving human beings, and they would continue to live in their wealth and convenience.
Headline Four: Sparta, 450 BC
Almost 2,500 years ago in ancient Greece, a soldier anxiously awaited the birth of his firstborn son. After discovering that his newborn son had a disability, his excitement ceased. He believed the child would never become a warrior that Sparta demanded, so he carried his son beyond the city limits and abandoned him on a mountainside. The infant was left in the elements to die.
What do these headlines have in common?
As you might have gathered, the dehumanizations that many believe only live in the past sins of our ancestors are strikingly similar to those that occur today. We have a false belief that our modern society is less barbaric than previous societies throughout history. However, our modern society is not merely strikingly similar to those past societies we look down on… it may be worse.
We have cars, running water, and cell phones, but none of this exempts us from committing widespread evil. In fact, one could argue our modern advanced technology only heightens the depths of evil that the enemy can use to torment and dehumanize the masses through our fellow humans.
The wars of the 20th century along with the sexual revolution destroyed Christian Europe and America. This rift has led to the west becoming “more atheistic.” However, the problem with this is that the atheist mindset only leads to the worship of science, which in itself is just another false religion, an idolatry, one that has damaged all of our understanding of the supernatural. C.S. Lewis delivers one of the greatest depictions of how the worship of science leads to a post-human and inorganic reality in his book That Hideous Strength.
“What are you driving at, Professor?” said Gould. “After all we are organisms ourselves.”
“I grant it. That is the point. In us organic life has produced Mind. It has done its work. After that we want no more of it. We do not want the world any longer furred over with organic life, like what you call the blue mold—all sprouting and budding and breeding and decaying. We must get rid of it. By little and little, of course. Slowly we learn how. Learn to make our brains live with less and less body: learn to build our bodies directly with chemicals, no longer have to stuff them full of dead brutes and weeds. Learn how to reproduce ourselves without copulation.” (C.S. Lewis. That Hideous Strength)
The antagonist’s plot in That Hideous Strength is eerily similar to the publicly stated intentions of the elites who promote transhumanism today. This ideology stems from the worship of science and the worship of self. As we see later in the book, the worship of science and the worship of self always leads to a bitter end.
“Wither knew that everything was lost. It is incredible how little this knowledge moved him. What had been in his far-off youth a merely aesthetic repugnance to realities that were crude or vulgar, had deepened and darkened, year after year, into a fixed refusal of everything that was in any degree other than himself. He had passed from Hegel into Hume, thence through Pragmatism, and thence through logical Positivism, and out at last into the complete void. The indicative mood now corresponded to no thought that his mind could entertain. He had willed with his whole heart that there should be no reality and no truth, and now even the imminence of his own ruin could not wake him.” (C.S. Lewis. That Hideous Strength)
Sometimes, the darkness seemingly prevails for a time, but in the end, those who carry it will be left empty. Transhumanism is a complete rejection of God, and the ultimate end of the worship of self and science. Accepting transhumanism is to reject the science defying miracles that take place in the life of ordinary Christianity and to put full faith into a false promise that science will keep a mind “alive” long after the body is decayed. We each have a much greater purpose to fulfill in the time we are given on this earth.
“The laws of the universe are never broken. Your mistake is to think that the little regularities we have observed on one planet for a few hundred years are the real unbreakable laws; whereas they are only the remote results which the true laws bring about more often than not; as a kind of accident.” (C.S. Lewis. That Hideous Strength)
So, despite an atheistic shift in the once God fearing west, the public is not less spiritual. We are not more sophisticated, we are not less barbaric, and we are not less spiritual than the past. When we as humans decide to worship other gods—the god of convenience, the god of pleasure, science or self, power or money—the same end is reached.
The date on the calendar, or the seemingly atheistic outlook of the west, does not prohibit the same demons to riddle the earth as they have throughout history. It is perfectly normal for a Christian in the modern day to look back at the stories of the Bible and of ancient history and assume that supernatural forces were at work in those times. If you ask the same group of Christians, some would most certainly be hesitant to drag that same belief of supernatural events into the modern world.
Answering the call
Why is it important that we recognize the supernatural forces are a reality today? Because it is essential to know what we are fighting to be able to fight it. The good news is that as Christians, God placed us here for a reason. Our individual lives have a purpose: To combat the same evil that we read about in stories and in history. And we have an incredible opportunity to be like the heroes of the Bible and the heroes of your favorite book who decided to stand up to the evil that roams throughout the world seeking the ruin of souls.
God wants you to participate in his story of defeating abortion.
We all have a choice. We can participate in the evil, do nothing about it, or faithfully fight to end the merciless shedding of innocent blood throughout the country and world.
